Last year a friend of mine, Maude Haeger, participated in a challenge. The made a beautiful little quilt that was exhibited in about a dozen different locations across the US. All the little quilts were then put on Ebay to raise money for the organization that started the challenge. I couldn't bid myself, because the seller had specified 'US and Canada only'. But you can do a lot with a little determination. Another US friend bid for me. We had a very exciting and nail-biting time watching the auction, and I'm over that moon that the price did not go too high.
By now 'Casa del Sol' has arrived in the cold, wet, and dark UK. It's a wonderful ray of sunshine in my life and radiates positive vibes. The pieces and beading is exquisite, and the 3-D face is so quirky, you just want to kiss it.
So, this is my Christmas present to myself. Thank you Maude and Carolyn for making it possible!

I just love it and if it wants a seaside holiday it can come to me for a week, it does look kissable and l coud do with some sundshine as these days are getting darker but next week has the longest day so from then on SPRING thank goodness

I tried to type out a letter to you one night. I was a bad girl and got those fancy fingernails. As I tried to post the letter, my fancy nails hit something and I lost the whole letter. So tonight I am being smart. One, I got rid of the nails and two I am typing this in a Micro-soft word document first and then I can hopefully cut and paste.
But I also figured out another problem was that I didn’t k now I had a google account which is how this computer lets me add to your blog. Finally, once again tonight, I have reset my password, and will hopefully in the next couple of minutes so my reply and thank you to you on your blog. Go Maudie!
FIRST _ thank you so much for paying me the compliment of buying my piece. When I made Casa Del Sol I figured it was a “lost child” – in other words I would send it out into the world and I would never hear from it again. BUT I do get to hear from it because I get to hear from you. Bless your heart – I hope you are still enjoying it.
For people who might want to know, the face is done in the butterfly material that I also used in a piece on my web site – Solarus I. It is incredible how much light that piece of cloth carries with it.
I got the idea for the face from embroideries I did a long time ago of the four winds. If you look on old maps of the world they have pictures of the winds blowing at the ocean. I copied the North, East, South and West winds from drawing to embroidery when I was in high school. I still have the quilt, actually. I also created faces out of hand made felt about twenty years ago. I combined all that into the sunny face of Casa del Sol. The outside edge is very small New York Beauty piecing of the crown.
Well, since trying to write you last time we have accomplished the Dec. 29 wedding. Tim, our middle son, got married to Becky on December 29 in our home. Before the wedding all I did was clean and decorate. On Dec. 29 I got up around 5 a.m. and decorated the wedding cake. I had baked it and froze the pieces a couple of days ahead. I had total peace and quiet at 5 in the morning though, and so was able to figure out what this amateur cake decorator was going to do. It did turn out nicely. Becky loves pink so the cake was strawberry. I made heart shaped cakes and we used the floating cake stand Wilton sells. It looked nice. I also got the two bridesmaid’s dresses donw as well as alterations on the wedding dress.
I enjoyed having Walter home and wish something would happen so he could be here permanently, but in the meantime, John, our youngest, has graduated from Aveda salons as a hair dresser and will be working for Nick Arrojo Studios in New York City beginning Feb. 1. So maybe Walter is supposed to be in New Jersey which is not far away just in case. I don’t know.
I continue to love my job but also realize that I need to live with Walter so I am in the market for a job with someone in New Jersey. Anyone who wants a good teacher for autistic children or other special ed., call on me, I would do my very best for anyone.
I do seem to be coming to another wedding on April 24 in San Antonio which I think is where our good friend Sonja lives. I hope to get to see her while I am down there in Texas.
Once again, Lorchen, I am totally honored that you would love my piece so much to go to all the trouble you did to get it. Thank you so much for the compliment. I hope Casa del Sol is still lighting up your home. Love, Maudie
